Journalist Gauri Lankesh: Bold Voice Against Sangh Assassinated

New Delhi 5 September. In an assassination that has shocked people all over the country, journalist Gauri Lankesh has been shot dead at her home in Bengaluru by unidentified men on a bike. Gauri Lankesh was a bold and intrepid independent journalist who wrote tirelessly against communal fascists in India. The manner of her death appears to be similar to the assassinations of Narendra Dabholkar, Govind Pansare and MM Kalburgi, in which the Abhinav Bharat, a saffron terrorist outfit, had been implicated. The fact that the killers of Dabholkar, Pansare and Kalburgi are yet to be punished is a...

Landmark SC Judgement Thwarts Government Move to Violate Fundamental Right to Privacy

It was ordinary citizens from all over the country whose determination led to the landmark Supreme Court judgement upholding right to privacy as a fundamental right against the Central Government’s efforts to violate privacy and demand revelation of data under Aadhaar. The Government of India as well as various BJP ruled states argued in Court that citizens do not enjoy a right to privacy; that the poor do not need privacy; that citizens do not have a right over their own bodies; that the Constitution made no mention of privacy. The Supreme Court verdict demolished these arguments and upheld the right to privacy as a fundamental right. It affirmed that the right to privacy is not “granted” by the Constitution; rather every person is born with this right which the Constitution recognizes and affirms. This remarkable and historic verdict has many aspects that give fresh meaning and relevance to the Constitution. One of its most significant aspects is that it reviewed and corrected the Supreme Court’s own flawed judgments – upholding the Emergency and upholding Section 377 that criminalises LGBT persons. The verdict affirms, ““Discrimination against an individual on the basis of sexual orientation is deeply offensive to the dignity and self-worth of the individual.” The verdict also affirms, “I do not think that anybody would like to be told by the State as to what they should eat...

Riots by Supporters of Rape Convict Ram Rahim: Khattar Must Resign

The CPI(ML) salutes the two women who courageously pursued the complaint of rape against Dera Saccha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim for 15 years, till he was convicted on 25 August 2017 by a CBI Court. The women had to watch Ram Rahim receive public political patronage from a range of powerful political parties and leaders; they had to watch a journalist who published their story be murdered – and yet they did not turn back. The rioting that followed the rape conviction of Ram Rahim is squarely due to the deliberate collusion of the Haryana Government, which took no measures to prevent the gathering of a massive number of Dera supporters; nor to confiscate weapons which had been stockpiled in Dera centres all over the State. The High Court has rightly pulled up the Haryana Government for its collusion and has also had to remind the Prime Minister that he is “the PM of the country not of BJP” and that his Government too had a responsibility to prevent the rioting. Ram Rahim has enjoyed patronage of the Congress and the INLD in the past. For the past several years, top BJP leaders have wooed him for electoral support in exchange for vast funds including public funds, as well as political patronage. In spite of the fact that Ram Rahim was accused of rapes and murders, none less...

CPI(ML) Calls for All India Protests on the Eve of Independence Day, 14 August. New Delhi, 12 August. The whole country is shocked by the deaths of 63 children in hospital in Gorakhpur. It is a shame that as we approach 70 years of India’s independence, government hospitals are still death chambers for children of the poor. Yogi Adityanath, a five time MP from Gorakhpur, and who is...

Resist the Illegitimate JDU-BJP Regime, Reclaim the Spirit of the 2015 Bihar Mandate

“It took barely 36 hours for one of the biggest political U-turns to be taken to its successful conclusion. Operation Bihar was the political equivalent of Hitler’s 1940 Blitzkrieg and Israel’s success in the Six-Day War in 1967.” This profoundly insightful observation on the recent political coup in Bihar has come from leading BJP intellectual and Rajya Sabha member Swapan Dasgupta. Writing in the Times of India (30 July, 2017) on the implications of the Bihar developments, Dasgupta has marvelled at the ‘killer instinct’ of the BJP and especially the ‘operational finesse’ of the Modi-Shah duo. Of late, the...

CPIML statement on the Political Coup in Bihar and stealing of the 2015 mandate by the JDU-BJP Combine – Dipankar Bhattacharya.

29 July 2017. The alacrity with which Nitish Kumar first resigned as the CM of the Grand Alliance government in Bihar and then returned to the BJP fold to be sworn in as the head of an NDA government, all in less than twenty hours, can only be described as a political coup in Bihar. The very basis on which the people of Bihar had voted the GA to power was to stop the BJP from coming to power in the state, and this now stands overturned. Nitish Kumar has enabled his old long-standing ally to grab power in...

CPI(ML) Statement on Nitish Kumar’s Resignation and the Political Crisis in Bihar

New Delhi, 26 July. The Mahagathbandhan (Grand Alliance) led by Nitish Kumar and Lalu Prasad Yadav won a powerful mandate from the people of Bihar. The essence of this mandate was a decisive rejection of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s politics that posed a threat to social justice and communal harmony. Now, two years later, the Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has resigned citing allegations of corruption against RJD leaders. The fact is that the Grand Alliance has been a divided house for a considerable time now, with Nitish Kumar working against the mandate by siding with the NDA on crucial...

Intermediate Exam Result: Consequence of Government-Sponsored Plight of Education

The sorry state of Bihar’s schools is in the news again, with the declaration of the results of the Intermediate examination conducted by the Bihar School Examination Committee (run by the Bihar government). A total of about 12 lakh students had appeared in all three faculties of Intermediate – Arts, Science and Commerce – of whom 65% have been failed. Of the 35% successful candidates only 8% have secured 60% or more. Students and parents alike are protesting, alleging that due to the teachers’ strike, answer sheets have been evaluated in a questionable way and by unqualified persons. Meanwhile, another ‘topper scam’ is embarrassing Bihar. Last year’s Class X ‘topper’ Ruby Rai called political science ‘prodigal science’ and thought it involved cooking: she was the niece of the Principal Bachcha Rai, who was the mastermind of the topper scam. This year’s Intermediate topper in the Arts stream was 42-year-old Ganesh Kumar who fraudulently posed as a 24-year-old. When asked basic questions by a reporter about music, supposedly his subject, Ganesh Kumar gave laughable answers that proclaimed his lack of basic knowledge of music. The State Education Minister Ashok Choudhary, unabashed by this evidence of yet another topper scam, retorted, “Is the media person who posed queries to the topper himself a great musician?” It was AISA’s protests that first exposed this year’s topper scam. On June 1 AISA, knowing...
