The union territory government of Puducherry recently enacted a draconian Act “Loading and Unloading (Regulation of employment and Welfare) Act 2017” which criminalises loading and unloading workers. A huge protest demonstration, march and mass meeting was organised jointly by AICCTU, AITUC, INTUC, CITU, BMS, STU in front of the legislative assembly on 22 January. The trade union organisations have submitted a memorandum to the chief minister and labour minister demanding to repeal this Act.
