Bihar Vidhan Sabha Gherao By Students And Youth

Thousands of students and youth led by AISA and RYA gheraoed the Bihar Vidhan Sabha on 28 March 2017 on the issues of quality education, safety and resources in Ambedkar-Kasturba and all dalit and minority hostels; Rs 5000 unemployment allowance; regular appointments in all vacant government posts; CBI enquiry into education-employment scam; equal school system; revoking cuts in all poor, SC/ST, minority, OBC student scholarships; construction of new hostels, and other issues. The protesters were stopped at Gardanibagh where at the barricades it was addressed by CPI(ML) MLAs Mahboob Alam and Sudama Prasad. The speakers said that the condition of education in Bihar today is abysmal; in the name of employment, youth are being made to work long hours for a meagre honorarium or incentive; corruption is rampant and existing scholarships are being cut or revoked; dalit, minority and weaker sections are worst affected by these conditions. Scholarships to private technical institutions have been terminated midway, jeopardizing the future of the students; other scholarships have also been cut up to 80%. If students do manage to somehow reach school or college, they are in danger of rape and murder as in the case of Dika Kumari. We have raised these issues inside the Assembly but the government has no answers.

AISA and RYA leaders said that the Bihar government must stop trying to get political mileage out of the situation and must make arrangements for proper education and safety of students and employment for youth.

AISA-RYA submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister asking for prompt action on these issues.
