Publisher’s Note

On the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the martyrdom of Comrade Charu Mazumdar, here we bring together an assortment of materials that illuminate diverse dimensions of the life and work of the great revolutionary leader of the Indian people.

You will find here a brief life-sketch of CM and reminiscence by his elder daughter, Anita Mazumdar. A few rare photographs collected from the family album, some of them not very clear, show the very simple, unassuming man of the masses among his relatives and friends.

We have included a small collection of quotations from CM’s articles and talks to introduce the reader to the defining strands in CM’s political thought. A handful of photographs bring alive certain important junctures in his eventful life, including one taken in police custody on the eve of his martyrdom.

To the party founded by Charu Mazumdar, he remains and will ever remain an inexhaustible source of inspiration. In fact, it was on the second anniversary of his martyrdom that our central committee was reorganised with a view to reviving the movement and the party in the wake of the severe setback suffered in the early 1970s.

On innumerable occasions after his departure, party congresses, party organs and party leaders have paid rich tributes to his legacy, re-emphasising his cardinal contributions and great relevance of his teachings in current contexts. A select collection of such observations and article is also reproduced here.

The publication of this collection is synchronised with the inauguration of “Charu Bhavan” in Delhi — a day the entire party has long been eagerly waiting for. On this solemn occasion we, on behalf of all party members, revolutionary people of India, express deepest regards for Comrade Charu Mazumdar and all other noble souls who have laid down their lives on the altar of Indian revolution and take a collective pledge to carry forward their great mission.
