A fact-finding team of the Centre of Steel Workers, AICCTU, investigated the accidents that resulted in the deaths of three workers in the span of three days – 8-10 May – in the Bhilai Steel Plant. The workers who lost teir lives are Kamal Varma, contract worker Janak Singh and contract worker Indrajit was killed.
The team found that the workers lost their lives due to the failure of the BSP management to enforce safety rules. Contract workers are especially vulnerable, because when they raise safety issues they are ignored, and they are not even paid minimum wages.
The team demanded compensation for the workers, including steady, permanent jobs for a family member of each of the families that lost their earning members.
