The CPI (ML) held a dharna on 24 April 2018 at the Kushinagar District headquarters in Uttar Pradesh to protest against the police repression of minorities and to demand the arrest of the guilty police personnel.
In the incident in question, Gayasuddin, a youth residing in village Rudwaliya (Turkpatti Thana) was wheeling his motorcycle to fill petrol at a nearby petrol pump in the village. On the way he was accosted by two policemen who asked him to show the papers for the vehicle. Gayasuddin told them that the papers were at his home and asked for a little time to bring the papers. Then the police personnel stopped asking about the papers and started demanding money instead. When Gayasuddin refused to give money, they beat him up and took him to the police thana where he was further beaten up very badly. When Gayasuddin’s condition became serious the police personnel took him to the village in the middle of the night. Seeing Gayasuddin in a half-dead condition the villagers opposed the policemen and stopped them from returning. They allowed the policemen to go after the Thanedar came to the village and spoke to the villagers. The next day policemen in large numbers came to the village, entered Gayasuddin’s home, beat up all members including men and women, and vandalized the house. They did not even spare the neighbouring homes. When Gayasuddin’s family members reached the Thana to file a report about this, the police instead registered an FIR against the family of Gayasuddin.
Through the dharna the CPI(ML) demanded that the false FIR registered against Gayasuddin’s family members should be withdrawn, and a case should be registered against the guilty police personnel and they should be punished.
