Sanitation Workers Dharna in Nalanda

Biharsharif Municipal Corporation sanitation workers led by AICCTU and National Sanitation Workers Welfare Association (Rashtriya Safai Karmchari Kalyan Sangh) ended their indefinite dharna after talks with the City Commissioner on 27 December 2017 during which they were assured that all their demands would be fulfilled. The following are some of the demands which the City Commissioner has agreed to meet: wage raise for sanitation workers as per the fixed criteria; creation of posts and sending to Urban Development Ministry; PF, insurance, safety equipment, uniforms, free medical check-up twice a month for all sanitation workers.

AICCTU Bihar State Vice President Com. Maksudan Sharma, Manmohan, Welfare Association President Com. Umesh Bhagat, Chhotu Dom, Rajneesh, Vikki and other sanitation workers participated in the talks with the City Commissioner. After agreement was reached on the above demands, a Gate Meeting was held addressed by comrades Manmohan and Umesh Bhagat. The speakers said that both, the Central government and the State government, are neglecting the rights of sanitation workers. On the one hand PM Modi holds a broom for just one day and spends Rs 3600 crores just for advertisements under the Swachh BharatVictim of Demonetisation and GST, a Transporter Commits Suicide in Uttarakhand campaign; on the other hand excuses are made for lack of money to pay timely wages and housing for sanitation workers. Leaders of AICCTU and Sanitation Workers Welfare Association have warned that if the assurances given by the City Commissioner are not fulfilled, the sanitation workers will once again organize struggles.
