On 7 May, CPI(ML) held a procession and a dharna at the Garhwa district headquarters and sent a memorandum to the Governor of Jharkhand raising demands against police repression and violations of people’s rights. The protesters said that sand is being illegally mined even on land that belongs to farmers, and sold in neighbouring states with the collusion of the Sand Mafia and police. A police camp in Jogni village in Meral block unleashed repression on people protesting the illegal sand mining. Advocate Ashish Dubey was badly beaten up. The protesters demanded that the police camp be removed, illegal mining stopped, the injured people compensated, an enquiry ordered into the incident, the guilty police personnel sacked.
On 4 May, the police personnel belonging to the Meral camp were intoxicated and had badly beaten up and severely injured Chandeshwar Mehta and Umesh Mehta with a rifle butt without any provocation at all. When villagers protested, police lathicharged them and Om Prakash Mehta was severely injured. 10 people were arrested and jailed. The CPI(ML) has been protesting the incident ever since.
