On 9th July the 157 illegally retrenched workers of L&T Ltd., at Puducherry took out a massive rally along with their family members and children towards the legislative assembly demanding immediate reinstatement with all attendant benefits and continuity of service. The retrenched workers include even those who had put more than 10 years of continuity in service.

The rally started from 150 years old historic Swadeshi Cotton Mills, (some 80 years ago Swadeshi Mill workers fought for 08 hours work during the French imperialist rule. And the French rulers shot dead 13 workers in the struggle against 12 to 16 hrs work-day) and passed through main thoroughfares of Puducherry.

The rally was addressed by AICCTU leaders S. Balasubramanian, S. Purushothaman, S. Motilal, P. Murugan, of AICWF, and S. Baskaran, Secretary, L&T Union, Jananayaka Thozhilalargal Sangam
The main demands raised by workers included (i) Immediate reinstatement of all 157 illegally retrenched workers with back wages, continuity of service and other attendant benefits; (ii) Equal wage for equal work; (iii) Double the ordinary wages for overtime hours; (iv) Strict implementation of minimum wages to all category of workers; (v) Abolition illegal contract labour system which prevails in the L&T units; and (vi) To take stern action against bogus contractors and the officers of the management.

A delegation led by S. Balasubramanian met the labour Minister and submitted a memorandum.
