Defeat of Fascist Right-Wing Forces in France

Marine Le Pen, candidate of the fascist right-wing National Front (FN), was soundly defeated in the recently held Presidential elections in France. This defeat of rabid racism, xenophobia and Islamophobia by the people of France has to be welcomed. In the second round of the Presidential elections, Le Pen received 33.9% of the votes. She was defeated by Emmanuel Macron, who got 66.1% of the votes cast. The rise of a fascist right-wing force as a significant force in French politics is indeed a worrying trend. Till date, France’s political discourse has been dominated by the centre-right and the social democrats.
