More Victories for the ‘School on Streets’ Campaign in Phase III

As part of the phase three of the ongoing School on Streets (Sadak pe School) campaign, school classes were organized on the streets of Narayanpur Bazaar on the Ara- Arwal main road on June 1. Hundreds of students along with parents and youth participated in this school. Later, addressing the students and their parents, Bihar State Secretary of RYA, Manoj Manzil said that even after an entire month since the campaign started, the self-proclaimed social justice government of Nitish Kumar has not been able to provide adequate books, teachers and other necessary facilities to the children of the poor, Dalits and minorities studying in government schools. The inter results in which 67% students had failed have once again exposed the situation of school education in Bihar. Delhi AISA state president Com. Niraj said that the government is trying to snatch away the right to education guaranteed in the Constitution.

During this phase of the campaign the specific local problems were identified: (i) there are no teachers for nearly 7 subjects in the Narayanpur High School, (ii) 8 hours of studies does not happen in school, (iii) there is no proper building, and (iv) absence of toilets. Demands were made to ensure that these problems were addressed. Additionally, demands were also made to ensure that: (i) books were provided to primary and middle school students of Sevatha, Muradpur along with Narayanpur, (ii) students of all schools were provided scholarships for the year 2016-17, and (iii) money for cycle and uniform should be paid without delay.

As a result of this phase of the campaign, the school that never use to start on time has started functioning on time. Earlier where there were only 2 hours of studies, not 5 hours of studies are happening. There was a toilet in the school which use to remain closed. The toilet has been opened and the construction of another toilet has begun. There has also been an improvement in the quality of the mid-day meal.
