PROTEST MARCHES IN JHARKHAND AGAINST LATHICHARGE ON STUDENTS IN BHU

AISA organized a protest march culminating in a Nukkad Sabha on 26 September in Daltonganj to protest against the lathicharge on students in BHU who were demanding gender justice. Condemning the sexual harassment of female students and also the violence unleashed on students for demanding justice, the protestors raised slogans demanding that the VC of BHU be immediately suspended. AISA leaders addressing the protest pointed out the hypocrisy of the BJP-Sangh which on one hand raised the slogan of ‘Beti Bachao-Beti Padhao’ and on the other hand it tries to dismiss the protest of girls demanding their safety and freedom by calling them Naxalites and justifying the use of violence on them. They pointed out how students and youth across the country are rising up against the patriarchal thoughts and actions of the Sangh.

On 27 September, under the joint banner of AISA-RYA-AIPWA, a protest march was taken out from Saria Road, Kisan Bhawan to Bagodar Bazaar, in Bagodar. The protest march culminated into Nukaad Sabha on reaching the bus stand. The march saw a massive participation from young girls who raised slogans- “BHU administration must answer by lathicharge on girls demanding justice”; “Enough of attack on women, now the Modi government must go”; and the slogan made famous by BHU students- “Beti Bachegi tabhi to beti padhegi” (Only if the daughter survives will she be able to get education).

Addressing the protesters, AIPWA leader Poonam Mahto said that BJP that came to power riding on the promise of ‘Acche Din’ and ‘women empowerment’, however the assaults on women have only increased. Condemning the violence on the women students, she demanded that the BHU VC be removed. A protest programme was also organised in Ramgarh on 26 September.
