Defend JNU, Defend Democracy

Release Arrested Students, Withdraw Sedition Charges

CPIML strongly condemns the arrest of the JNUSU President and the bid to arrest several JNU student leaders, as well as the debarring of eight student activists from academic activities in JNU. This crackdown is nothing but a pre-planned war by the Modi Government against campus democracy and the student movement. Just as Rohith Vemula was branded anti-national and subjected to a witch-hunt, JNU student activists are today being subjected to the same political witch-hunt. Campuses like HCU and JNU are being targeted for raising voices of dissent against the Government and the Sangh Parivar.
The JNUSU leaders and leaders of Left student organisations have categorically condemned certain divisive and provocative slogans that were raised on the campus, and had acted promptly to stop such sloganeering. It is widely known that Left student organisations have never supported divisive slogans or ideas, and have always worked for people’s unity.
The CPIML calls upon people all over the country to stand in solidarity with JNU, and join and strengthen a campaign to Defend JNU, Defend Democracy. The campaign will demand the immediate release of all students and withdrawal of criminal charges including sedition, as well as withdrawal of draconian disciplinary action by JNU Administration against students.

General Secretary, CPIML
