The chemical bombing of civilians in the Syrian town Khan Sheikhoun on 4 April 2017 is a heinous war crime. The perpetrators of this grave crime must be identified and prosecuted by a credible probe. If the civil war situation inside Syria makes a credible internal probe difficult, an international probe is called for.
The authoritarian Assad regime in Syria faces a long-standing opposition, resulting in the current civil war and humanitarian crisis in Syria. While the civil war and anti-Assad rebellion does have multiple players including terrorist outfits aided by the US, the brutal strikes against civilians by the Assad regime cannot be justified in the name of a ‘war on terror.’
Nor must the crisis in Syria be used as a pretext for a US-led war on Syria. The Trump regime’s missile strike on Syria and the growing consensus in the US ruling class for a war on Syria must be firmly opposed.
Instead of imperialist wars and US and Russia meddling in Syria, a UN-monitored process for a political solution to the civil war in Syria is called for.
