Protest against Police Inaction in case of Sexual Assault of a Tribal Woman

On May 2, 2017 a senior district coordinator tried to molest and assault a young tribal woman working as block coordinator in the PHED department in Ramgarh district. The woman managed to escape and filed an FIR against him in the local women’s thana. However, the police tried to suppress and deny the matter by intimidating and threatening her. During this period, AIPWA Ramgarh district secretary Comrade Nita and the office bearers of the Bediya Vikas Parishad issued written information to the SP, DC and the PHED minister about the same. However, even after 20-25 days, no action was taken against the accused. On 26 May 2017, with the initiative of AIPWA, a united protest march was taken out in Ramgarh by Bediya Vikas Parishad, Adivasi Samajik Sangathan, Bharat Jakat Manjhi Pargana Mahal, Adivasi Chhatra Sangh and other progressive citizens. The protestors remained unfazed by the heavy rains and hailstorm and raising loud angry slogans reached the Ramgarh block office. While addressing the protestors, Com. Nita said that the despite filing of the FIR no action was being taken against the accused since he belonged to the dominant caste and this will not be tolerated. She added that police administration had failed to find the killers of tribal girls Chandmuni Soren, Priya Murmu and Sonali Murmu. The protestors condemned the failure to act against the accused and demanded his immediate arrest.
