The All India Students’ Association (AISA) has condemned the passage of the Trans Amendment Bill 2026 in the Lok Sabha, describing it as a unilateral move that exposes the government’s anti-people and anti-trans character.
In a statement issued on 24 March, AISA said the bill was passed in the lower house even as trans rights groups and activists continue to oppose it. The organisation said the bill delegitimises self identification and replaces it with medical and legal control by the state, pushing back trans rights and reinforcing structures of exclusion.
AISA said that dissent against the bill was marginalised in Parliament, with the ruling government pushing through its agenda in the name of protecting rights. It added that regressive ideas about gender and arguments around protection of children were used to justify the move.
The organisation said that voices from the community and constitutional rights activists remain outside Parliament, as the government has refused to engage with those who reject the bill.
Drawing parallels with the passage of Labour Codes and Farm Laws, AISA said the bill represents another instance of policies being imposed against the interests of those directly affected.
AISA reiterated its demand for the Trans Amendment Bill 2026 to be rejected and called for policies that genuinely protect the rights of trans people. It also demanded horizontal reservation and government funded medical and legal support for the trans community.
