Cancel the Jnanpith Award to be Conferred on Vairamuthu, a Sexual Predator

The All India Progressive Women’s Association (AIPWA) has demanded the cancellation of the Jnanpith Award announced for Tamil poet and lyricist Vairamuthu, stating that the decision is unjust and undermines women who have spoken out against sexual misconduct.

In a statement issued on March 16 by Dr E. Rati Rao, National President, and Meena Tiwari, National General Secretary, the organisation said the announcement of the 60th Jnanpith Award for 2025 has triggered strong reactions within progressive and women’s movements. It said that while congratulatory messages are pouring in, the award dishonours and disempowers women who raised allegations during the #MeToo movement in 2018.

The statement said that at least 17 women have accused Vairamuthu of sexual harassment. It referred to allegations made by playback singer and dubbing artist Chinmayi Sripada, who recounted incidents between 2000 and 2006, and said several other women later came forward with their accounts. It also cited accusations made in 2023 by singer Bhuvana Seshan regarding sexual misconduct during an event in Malaysia in 1990.

AIPWA said that Chinmayi faced a shadow ban in the film industry after speaking out, while Bhuvana’s refusal to comply with sexual advances adversely affected her career. It stated that Vairamuthu has been shielded by his stature and influence in the Tamil film industry, with patriarchal structures and political parties continuing to legitimise and patronise him despite the accusations.

The organisation said that in the context of Tamil Nadu’s assembly elections, the award announcement reflects a political move by the BJP-led central government to make inroads into the state. It said the decision is another instance of protecting and honouring those accused of sexual misconduct, while undermining women survivors.

AIPWA said the Jnanpith Award should not lose its credibility due to such a decision. It reiterated its demand that the award be immediately cancelled and called for upholding the rights and dignity of women.
