Central Trade Unions Extend Support Maharashtra Electricity Employees Strike Against Privatization

The Joint Platform of Central Trade Unions in a statement issued on October 9, 2025 have expressed solidarity with the strike of over one lakh employees and engineers of state-owned electricity companies across Maharashtra to oppose the government’s privatization moves. The strike, organized by the Maharashtra Power Sector Joint Action Committee of Employees, Engineers & Officers, spans the generation, transmission, and distribution sectors.

Seven major unions, including the Maharashtra State Electricity Workers Federation, Maharashtra Veej Kamgar Mahasangh, Maharashtra Veej Kamgar Congress, Subordinate Engineering Association, Maharashtra Rajya Magaswargiya Vidyut Karamchari Sanghatan, Maharashtra Rajya Swabhimani Vidyut Workers Union, and the Tantrik Kamgar Union, have joined the strike, with more than 80 percent of employees participating.

On the first day, massive meetings were held in Nagpur, where striking employees and engineers gathered for a demonstration and dharna outside the office of the Chief Engineer. Large rallies and demonstrations were also organized in Mumbai and Kalyan, addressed by leaders of the Joint Action Committee, who warned the state government against privatization attempts.

Speakers at the rallies praised the heroic struggle of electricity workers in Uttar Pradesh, who have been fighting privatization attempts for over 300 days, urging Maharashtra to follow a similar path of resistance.

The platform of trade unions have called for intensified struggle against the rampant privatization of electricity sector across the country.
