The CPI(ML) Liberation, Delhi unit organised a relief campaign for displaced residents in the Wazirpur area of Delhi on 27 June, where widespread demolitions have left hundreds of urban poor without shelter, food or basic necessities. The campaign involved the distribution of tarpaulin sheets, medicines, gram, jaggery and other essential items to families now forced to live under the open sky along railway lines.
The relief initiative comes in response to an ongoing demolition drive carried out by railway authorities. Despite a case pending before the Delhi High Court, which has questioned the legality of the blanket eviction notices lacking specific house or survey numbers, the authorities have proceeded with demolitions that violate legal norms and human rights.
The first phase of demolitions in Wazirpur was conducted on 2 June 2025 by the railway authority, disregarding its own notice as well as established legal safeguards. The Supreme Court has repeatedly held that no demolition of residential areas should take place without prior rehabilitation and provision of alternative accommodation. These directives have been blatantly ignored.
A notice dated 19 May 2025, which formed the basis for the initial demolitions, referred specifically to the removal of second-floor structures obstructing railway signal visibility. However, the authorities have extended the scope of demolition far beyond this, razing entire homes that posed no such obstruction.
Demolition activities on 26 June followed a similar pattern, with houses being razed despite not falling within the parameters of any official notice. CPI(ML) Delhi State Secretary Ravi Rai, State Committee member Sweta Raj, and other party activists joined local residents in protesting the demolitions.
The Modi-led BJP government had once promised secure housing for the urban poor. However, its continued silence as people’s homes are destroyed without notice, rehabilitation or compensation reveals a deep-rooted apathy towards the working class. Instead of ensuring the rights and dignity of the poor, the government is enabling what CPI(ML) has termed a “Bulldozer Raj” against Delhi’s most vulnerable.
CPI(M) demands an immediate halt to all unlawful demolitions and calls for proper rehabilitation and full compensation for affected families. The party also appeals to citizens, civil society groups and democratic forces to support the ongoing relief campaign and to stand in solidarity with the displaced and working people of Delhi.
