On the 1198th day of the struggle, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced in a meeting with the Farmers Struggle Committee and Samyukta Horata - Karnataka, that the State Government has decided to drop the land acquisition and that only the lands of those consenting for land acquisition would be considered to be acquired depending on the circumstances. CPI(ML) Liberation salutes the farmers for their brave struggle and historic victory.
Forcible acquisition is premised on the principle of eminent domain, and justified in the name of “public interest”, is a colonial relic and has no place in a democracy. The State Government must bear this in mind in the future and refrain from any forcible acquisition as it has done in the Devanahalli case.
We reiterate our demand that the State Government must prepare White Paper on lands acquired under various statutes and for various purposes, containing the extent of acquired land utilized, unutilized and of acquired lands with non-functional industries and projects. Further, It is necessary that all state laws providing for land acquisition ought to be repealed in view of the enactment of the “Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Act, 2013”.
