In a strong protest against hate-fuelled violence, students of Delhi University, along with members of the All India Students’ Association (AISA), marched through the streets of Vijaynagar on 29 May 2025, raising their voices against the growing tide of communal and racial attacks.
The protest was triggered by a disturbing incident in which a shop owned by a resident from North East India was violently targeted by a right-wing communal mob. Eyewitnesses reported that the assailants not only vandalised the shop but also shouted racist slurs and sought to intimidate local residents and students—particularly those from marginalised backgrounds.
Student protesters declared that the attack was not an isolated event, but part of a “larger pattern of targeted hate, growing communalism, and deliberate attempts to polarise our campuses.”
Marching in defiance, students chanted slogans for unity and dignity, asserting: “We will not be silenced, we will not be divided, and we will not allow hate to fester in our streets and universities.”
Addressing the crowd, Anjali, AISA DU Secretary, said: “This attack is not to be seen in isolation, it is part of a growing pattern of systemic hate and racial targeting, especially of students and workers from North East India, south of India and of people from marginalised and minority communities. Our campuses must be safe spaces of inclusivity and diversity, not zones of fear and intimidation. Today’s march is not just an appeal for harmony, it is a warning—hate will not pass. Communalism will not go unchallenged. We, the students of DU, will fight back, for dignity and our rights.”
AISA has demanded the immediate registration of an FIR, arrest of the perpetrators, and strict legal action against those responsible for orchestrating the act of violence.
