CPI(ML) MP and member of the Standing Committee on Railways, Sudama Prasad, has issued a scathing letter to the Committee’s Chairperson, Shri C M Ramesh, in the wake of a tragic accident on a Mumbai suburban train that claimed four lives and injured nine others. In his letter dated June 10, the Arrah (Bihar) MP condemned the government's inaction on the safety of ordinary passengers, calling it a “failure of priorities” in favour of corporate-friendly projects like Vande Bharat.
Highlighting that local trains are the lifeline of Mumbai, the MP questioned why the deaths of common people are the only trigger for safety measures such as the long-overdue closing of train doors. “Efforts should have been made to increase passenger safety long ago,” he stated, pointing to the overcrowded and unsafe conditions in general compartments.
The letter strongly criticised the Modi government for its indifference towards the struggles of working-class commuters, contrasting it with its lavish promotion of premium services for the elite. “Despite tall claims, nothing is changing on the ground for the common man,” he wrote.
Sudama Prasad urged the Standing Committee to convene a special meeting with officials from all divisions of the Railways to demand accountability and concrete answers. He called for immediate steps to ensure the safety of ordinary passengers and prevent further tragedies.
The intervention reflects a growing anger among working people and progressive voices against systemic neglect and increasing inequality in public infrastructure.
