On Ambedkar Jayanti, CPIML Vows to Intensify Struggle to Defend Constitution and Democracy

On the birth anniversary of Dr B.R. Ambedkar on 14 April, architect of the Indian Constitution, the CPI(ML) programmes across the country vowing to intensify the fight against the growing fascist assault on the Constitution and democracy under BJP rule.

The party criticised the Modi government for "mortgaging national sovereignty to the United States" and exposing the hollowness of the BJP’s so-called patriotism. CPI(ML) called on people to resist communal conspiracies and defend the values enshrined in the Constitution. A major demand raised during the day’s observances was the immediate withdrawal of the communal and unconstitutional amendments to the Waqf Act recently passed by the government.

Bihar

In Patna, party members, including Legislative Council member Comrade Shashi Yadav, K.D. Yadav, Saroj Chaubey, Abhyuday, and Jitendra Kumar, paid floral tribute at Dr Ambedkar’s statue located near the High Court. CPI(ML) cadres also took out a march in Chitkohra, reaffirming their commitment to defend the Constitution.

CPI(ML) MLA from Phulwari, Gopal Ravidas, participated in Ambedkar Jayanti programmes held in Korewan (Kheri), Byapur (Maner), Usfa (Fatuha), Simra (Parsa), and Mahuli (Phulwari). Similar events were held across Bihar, including in Darbhanga, Arwal, Begusarai, Bihar Sharif, Madhubani, Aurai, Muzaffarpur, Jehanabad, Panapur, Ghosi, Vikramganj, Samastipur, and Bettiah.

At the panchayat level, CPI(ML) leaders read out the party’s appeal, exposing the RSS-BJP’s intensifying attacks on the Constitution and their subservience to American imperialism. People resolved to resist the communal agenda seeking to drag the country backwards and pledged to carry forward Ambedkar’s legacy in defence of secularism, social justice, and democracy.

The speakers emphasised that India is witnessing daily assaults on constitutional principles, and the cry for turning the country into a ‘Hindu Rashtra’ is growing louder. They recalled Dr Ambedkar’s historic warning: “If Hindu Raj does become a fact, it will, no doubt, be the greatest calamity for this country. It is incompatible with democracy. It must be stopped at all costs.”

Uttar Pradesh

In Gorakhpur, CPI(ML) State Committee member Rajesh Sahni led a tribute at Ambedkar Chowk, laying flowers at Dr Ambedkar’s statue and addressing party cadres. “To fulfil Babasaheb’s dream, we must close the widening chasm of social inequality,” he said. “Even 75 years after independence, wealth and power remain concentrated in the hands of a few. The nation’s resources must be reclaimed from corporate control.”

As part of the CPI(ML)’s national call to observe Ambedkar Jayanti Week, a public meeting was also held on the eve of the anniversary in Semra Devi Prasad (Bansgaon), focusing on Ambedkar’s vision and the ongoing assault on social justice.

AIPWA district secretary Jagdamba criticised the Modi regime, stating, “The current government is trampling the ideals of equality, liberty, and fraternity. Instead of upholding Ambedkar’s legacy, it is fostering hatred and inequality.”

In Lucknow, CPI(ML) leaders including district in-charge Comrade Ramesh Singh Sengar, RYA’s Rajiv Gupta, AIPWA’s Kamla Gautam, and AISA’s Shantam Nidhi led a spirited programme at Hazratganj. Amid slogans like "We will fulfil Babasaheb’s dreams!" and "We will not tolerate attacks on the Constitution!", participants laid floral tributes at Ambedkar’s statue and renewed their pledge to protect democracy.

Jharkhand

In Ranchi, CPI(ML)’s Jharkhand State Office organised a seminar titled “Ambedkar’s India and Today’s Challenges” to mark both Ambedkar Jayanti and the martyrdom day of CPI(ML)’s slain MLA Gurudas Chatterjee. The event began with tributes to Chatterjee, remembered as a fearless voice of workers, farmers, Dalits, and the oppressed, silenced by mafia and feudal forces.

Speakers, including CPI(ML) Central Committee member Subhendu Sen, journalist Faisal Anurag, and leaders like Anant Pratap and Kumar Varun, warned of the growing grip of Manuwadi forces and the aggressive push for a Hindu Rashtra. “These forces want to replace the Constitution with Manusmriti,” they said. “Dalits, Adivasis, women, and minorities are being pushed into second-class citizenship.”

The seminar denounced the Modi regime’s politics of hate, polarisation, and corporate appeasement, accusing it of privatising health, education, and employment—betraying Ambedkar’s vision of dignity and equality for all.

In Karnataka, members of the Pourakarmikas’ union and leaders from the CPI(ML) paid tribute to Dr B.R. Ambedkar and resolved to carry forward his legacy by intensifying struggles against casteism, communalism, and corporate tyranny. In Delhi, on Ambedkar Jayanti, marches were organised in Kusumpur Pahari, Narela, and other areas, reaffirming the commitment to spread the values enshrined in the Constitution’s preamble—justice, liberty, equality, and fraternity—to every corner of society.

In Uttarakhand, tributes were paid to Dr Ambedkar by garlanding his statue in Rudrapur and taking a pledge to defend the Constitution and its ethos. Ambedkar Jayanti programmes were also held across West Bengal, issuing a clarion call to defeat the communal-fascist conspiracy of the BJP-RSS alliance to spread hatred and foster communal polarisation.
