Protest Against Labour Codes in Ranchi

The Jharkhand state unit of AICCTU organised a day-long protest dharna in front of the Jharkhand Legislative Assembly here on December 10 demanding that the state government pass a resolution in the Assembly rejecting the implementation of the four labour codes in Jharkhand.

The main address was delivered by Comrade Haldhar Mahto, who explained in detail the potentially disastrous impact of the labour codes on workers in Jharkhand. He also informed the gathering that CPIML MLA Arup Chatterjee had raised the demand inside the Assembly in support of the workers.

Hundreds of workers from different sectors participated in the programme. Several speakers highlighted the anti-worker character of the four labour codes and stressed the importance of intensifying struggles against them in the coming months.

At the end of the programme, three resolutions were unanimously adopted. The first resolved to vigorously implement in Jharkhand the decisions taken at the December 9 meeting of the National Joint Platform of Trade Unions, particularly the programme of direct action proposed for February. The second resolution pledged to continue sustained struggle against the central government’s decision to shut down HEC. The third resolution strongly condemned the attack on Comrade Bhuneshwar Kevat by communal forces and demanded strict action against the culprits.

The proceedings of the dharna were conducted by Bhuneshwar Kevat. The programme concluded with the symbolic burning of copies of the labour codes.
