CPI(ML) has expressed deep concern over the massive destruction of standing crops due to the third consecutive spell of severe hailstorms in several districts of North and East Bihar, and has demanded immediate compensation for affected farmers.
In a statement issued on March 28, CPI(ML) Bihar State Secretary Comrade Kunal said that crops including maize, wheat and pulses have suffered extensive damage, pushing already distressed farmers to the brink of ruin. He said that the repeated hailstorms have “broken the backbone of farmers,” destroying their year-long hard work in a matter of minutes.
Highlighting the worsening agrarian crisis, he pointed out that farmers, already burdened by rising input costs, debt and adverse market conditions, are feeling completely helpless in the face of this fresh disaster. He criticised the government for its inaction, stating that no concrete relief measures have been announced so far.
CPI(ML) has demanded that the government immediately conduct a proper survey to assess the losses and provide compensation of at least Rs 50,000 per acre to all affected farmers. The Party also demanded complete loan waiver for those whose crops have been entirely destroyed and immediate disbursal of crop insurance without procedural delays.
The statement further called for provision of free seeds, fertilisers and necessary financial assistance to enable farmers to resume cultivation in the next sowing season.
