WB Violence: CPIML Appeals for Unity to Defend Communal Harmony

In the wake of recent violence in Murshidabad and other parts of West Bengal, the CPI(ML) Liberation has issued a strong appeal to people of all communities across the state to unite against the rising tide of hatred, division, and violence being orchestrated by communal forces. The party has called upon all democratic and secular sections of society to build a resolute and united movement to uphold Bengal’s long-standing tradition of communal harmony.

The violence, which erupted during protests in Samserganj, Suti, and Dhulian and other areas against the unconstitutional amendments to the Waqf Act, tragically claimed the lives of three civilians. In a statement issued on 13 April, the CPI(ML)’s West Bengal unit strongly condemned what it described as “deliberate provocation by divisive elements” that led to the clashes and held the state administration accountable for its “gross failure” in preventing the escalation of tensions. The party also recalled earlier incidents in Beldanga (Murshidabad) and Mothabari (Malda), where similar attempts to incite communal unrest had reportedly been orchestrated by Hindutva forces.

The CPI(ML) stated that the central government, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has pushed through unconstitutional amendments to the Waqf Act in a bid to strip the Muslim minority of their religious autonomy and further marginalise them both socially and politically. “This move is part of the broader communal-fascist offensive of the BJP-RSS combine,” the statement said, citing a sequence of regressive and unconstitutional measures including the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and the push for a Uniform Civil Code (UCC).

“The amended Waqf law is nothing but a state-sponsored project to expropriate institutional religious lands and properties belonging to the minority community. Across India, people are rising in protest against this assault on constitutional and secular values. We stand in full solidarity with these democratic movements,” the statement continued.

The CPI(ML) has demanded a high-level independent investigation into the incidents, along with adequate financial compensation and full security for the families of the deceased and the injured. The party also urged the state government to convene an all-party meeting to address the crisis and restore communal harmony. Furthermore, it called upon the West Bengal Legislative Assembly to pass a formal resolution opposing the implementation of the amended Waqf Act.

Reaffirming its commitment to secularism, equality, and justice, the CPI(ML) Liberation urged all Left, democratic, and secular forces to come together at this critical juncture to resist the divisive and fascistic politics of the ruling regime.

“As attempts are made to tear apart the secular fabric of Bengal, it is our collective responsibility to resist. Let us rise in defence of harmony, dignity, and justice,” the statement concluded.
